Located in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, (The House of Anjin) is the actual house where Miura Anjin (William Adams), a 16th-century English navigator and later the diplomatic advisor to Tokugawa Ieyasu, spent the last 8 years of his life. Miura Anjin played a key role in bridging Japan and the West during the early Edo period. His epic story made famous in the 2024 Emmy Award-winning TV-Series ‘SHOGUN’ (Disney+). On the ground floor, “Tsutaya”, a traditional Japanese / Dutch confectionery shop with over 400 years of history is still in operation and during the Edo period, served as the official confectioner for the Matsura clan, the lords of Hirado.
The first Englishman in Japan, Miura Anjin (William Adams) had a deep connection with Hirado, Nagasaki. Hirado is known as the base of William Adams‘ (Miura Anjin’s) late-life activities and the place where he spent his final days. It is also an important location where his grave site still exists today. Anjin-San earned the trust of Tokugawa Ieyasu, serving as a diplomatic advisor and an expert of Western technology. He was given the name 'Miura Anjin’ by Tokugawa and was highly valued as a diplomatic advisor. He helped make Hirado a vital hub for international trade in Japan, and played a key role in connecting Japan with the West. Later, he married Oyuki, the daughter of an Edo merchant, and they had two children together. He passed away at age 55, in his home in Hirado..
